Good day all. This is the Charleston Police Department’s Citizens Advisory

Group (CAG) meeting schedule for 2012. The purpose of these meetings is

for Charleston Chief of Police Greg Mullen and his senior staff to meet with

residents in an open forum to get feedback on issues or concerns, community issues in general, and to keep a dialogue open with the community to form stronger partnerships. All citizens of the city of Charleston are welcome to attend these meetings.

The meetings will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. during the following

months, dates and locations:

• Team 1 area (Upper peninsula, north of Calhoun St.) meetings will be held at the John L. Dart Library at 1067 King Street and the Arthur W. Christopher Community Center at 265 Fishburne Street.

• Team 2 area (Lower Peninsula, below Calhoun St.) meetings will be held at the Charleston County Main Library at 68 Calhoun Street.

• Team 3 area (James and Johns Islands) meetings will be held at the James Island Library Branch at 1248 Camp Road.

Residents in the Charlestowne Neighborhood and adjacent areas are asked to please make an extra effort to remove all valuables and electronic items from your cars when parking them.

This is long-standing advice to make a daily habit, but over the past couple weeks almost two dozen vehicle break-ins have been reported. Some items stolen include GPS devices and I-Pods as well as wallets, computers, and more.

Removal of the objects thieves want is the primary factor car owners should address.

Other steps you can take:

1) Double-check that all car-doors are locked and windows are closed

2) Set car alarm systems

3) Increase the light by turning on porch-lights or driveway lights

4) Trim back shrubbery around parking areas

5) Periodically look outside

6) Call 911 whenever you hear suspicious noises during the night

7) Pay attention to dogs barking and check outside

8) Make sure to report all incidents to police. Many victims do not ever call police, giving an incomplete picture

9) We strongly discourage the practice of storing firearms in cars. There may be only only a piece of glass separating a thief from a weapon.

Finally, to keep updated daily on incidents in your area, all residents can use the on-line "P2C" (Police to Citizen) tool on the CPD website.

Festival of Lights named among 100 best

The American Bus Association recently announced that the James Island County Park Holiday Festival of Lights has been named one of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2012 by a tourism industry selection committee.
The list, which was published as a supplement to the September/October issue of Destinations magazine, said that the Holiday Festival of Lights offered excellent entertainment value to tour groups and individual travelers from around the world, according to the American Bus Association.
The Top 100 Events selection committee chose the Holiday Festival of Lights based on the event’s broad appeal, its accessibility to motor coaches and skill at handling large groups and a variety of other relevant criteria
With more than 2 million lights, the three-mile driving tour delivers more light displays each year, with more than 700 displays produced this season. In addition to the driving tour, guests can park the car and experience attractions, including Santa’s Village, a 50-ton sand sculpture, annual gingerbread house competition, marshmallow roasting pit and a festival gift shop.

Three Suspects Arrested After Committing Three Armed Robberies

Charleston Police arrested three suspects Tuesday night after three armed robberies were committed downtown within about 90 minutes.

Iris Isabelle Stapen, 19, of Sawgrass Road, is charged with three counts of armed robbery; Christian Phillips Dobson, 21, of Harleston Place, is charged with four counts of armed robbery and three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and Tyler Egan Ellis, 19, of Scotia Street, of McClellanville, is charged with four counts of armed robbery and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. They were all being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.

The first armed robbery occurred about 7:50 p.m. on Coming Street. The victim was walking on Coming Street when she was approached from behind by two men; one of them was armed with a knife. They grabbed her purse and fled the area in a truck.

The second armed robbery occurred about 9 p.m. near Vanderhorst Street and Smith Street. The victim was walking toward her car that was parked on Smith, when she was approached by a man armed with a handgun. The man snatched her purse from her shoulder and fled the area.

The third armed robbery occurred about 10 minutes later near Radcliffe Street and Radcliffe Place. Both victims were walking near that intersection when they were approached by two men; one of them was armed with a handgun. The suspects robbed the victims of their purse and wallet.

A description of the suspects and their vehicle was provided to all on duty officers. Sgt. Shane LaFromboise initiated a traffic stop near Meeting Street and Columbus Street of a vehicle which its occupants matched the description of the armed robbery suspects.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, the suspects were taken into custody and charged accordingly.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY

TIPS FOR TRICK-OR-TREATERS

§ Carry a flashlight with you for visibility.

§ Always stay in a group with an adult!

§ Never enter a stranger’s house or car for a treat!

§ Always walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the grass away from the street.

§ Look both ways before crossing the street and if you are wearing a mask take it off.

§ Wait until an adult can check your candy before you eat any of it.

§ Only accept treats from neighbors or friends you know!

TIPS FOR PARENTS

§ Plan costumes that are bright and reflective! Consider adding more reflective tape to

§ costumes + trick or treat bags. Always carry flashlights.

§ Masks can limit or block eyesight, consider makeup or cut the mask eyeholes bigger

so they can see. Remind children to remove their masks to cross the street!

§ We recommend that children do not use props like guns, knives, or swords.

§ However, if they are used, make sure they don’t look real!

§ Clear hazards from your property. Remove obstacles such as flower pots and garden

hoses, so children won’t trip on them rushing from house to house.

§ Remind your children not to eat the candy until an adult has checked their treats!

§ Your child’s school may be having a Halloween party. Call the School and ask.

§ Please explain to children the difference between tricks and vandalism.

TIPS FOR BUSINESSES/MOTORISTS

§ Heighten your awareness and be cautious of purchases that may have the potential

to cause personal injury or property damage – such as paint ball guns or large quantities of eggs.

§ Drive slowly and cautiously through your neighborhoods. Remember children may not look before crossing the street.

Please report any suspicious activity immediately to the local law enforcement agency. As always in an emergency call 911. Have a Safe and Happy Halloween!

2nd Sunday on King Street, Charleston's most popular shopping, dining and cultural event, continues September 11, 2011 from 1:00-5:00 PM. More information about 2nd Sunday food, musicians, events and activities can be found at www.2ndsundayonkingstreet.com.

This month, 2nd Sunday will be followed by a special City of Charleston 10-year anniversary commemoration concert in remembrance of September 11, 2001.

The free concert takes place at Marion Square from 5:00 - 6:30 PM. It will be in partnership with Operation R&R, a non-profit organization designed to provide service men and women an opportunity to reconnect with their spouses and children on a vacation when they return from deployments Iraq and Afghanistan.

Reflective and patriotic music will be performed by the Charleston Community Band, Charleston Men's Chorus, Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus, College of Charleston, the Citadel and others. The event will honor and remember our first responders, military service men and women and those who perished in all of the events on September 11, 2001. Charleston Police Department Re-accredited and Receives Excellence Award from CALEA

The Charleston Police Department was recently re-accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) at the Commissions annual meeting July 30^th in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Charleston Police Department was initially accredited in 1991. Since then, the Department has maintained compliance with 464 national standards pertaining to law enforcement agencies to ensure its re-accreditation, which is a three year process voluntarily undertaken by law enforcement agencies.

During a four day period in April, a team of assessors reviewed the Police Department’s policies, procedures, equipment and facilities and spoke with many members of the community about the Police Department.

The assessors also held a public information session to hear from interested citizens as they attempted to verify compliance with the standards.

Also at the annual meeting, the Department was presented with the Accreditation with Excellence Award, which was created as a symbolic incentive for agencies to employ CALEA Accreditation in a manner that sets the benchmark for public safety professionalism. The award has been structured for the recognition of agencies that have met the following criteria:

Excellence in the development and implementation of contemporary policies and procedures
Excellence in the ability to use the CALEA Accreditation process as a tool for continuous organizational improvement
Excellence in the collection, review and analysis of organizational data for the purpose of public safety service improvement
Advocacy for CALEA Accreditation as a strategy for enhancing the professional standing of public safety
Excellence in addressing the intent of CALEA standards, beyond compliance
Organizational culture supportive of CALEA Accreditation
Standards compliance and accreditation process success

As an update on the painting to the wooden portion of our home, the city declined to grant our painter a permit because that portion of the home tested positive for lead paint. It can still be painted. However, the painter who does the work must have a special certification in order to proceed, and, unbeknown to us, the company we hired does not. The special certification is relatively new, and we were also unaware previously that there was lead paint on the wooden portion of the home (the wooden portion is a later addition to the home and not part of the original structure). It goes without saying that this is disappointing as we all are looking forward to the new paint. As you know, we had been waiting until the weather was warm enough for the paint to adhere in order to begin the painting project. However, we are moving forward to line up a new, certified painter to proceed as soon as possible.

I will continue to keep you updated; in the meantime, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. You may have noticed that the wood has been cleaned and windows repaired lately as a start to the painting project. We are all looking forward to getting this underway soon

CHRISTMAS and HOLIDAY SAFETY

Christmas and the holidays are an exciting and busy time but with all the joys of the holiday season come potential safety hazards that can cause injury or even death. Help prevent injuries at Christmas and during the holidays by following these tips:

Christmas tree safety begins with the selection and purchase of a fresh tree. When buying a live pre-cut tree, make sure the tree is still alive and healthy. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from the branches, and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. Pull on the needles. The trunk should be sticky and the limbs should be very flexible. Lift the tree and bounce the cut end on the ground, if a bunch of needles come tumbling off, it isn’t a safe tree to take home.
When you get the tree home, cut off the bottom two inches of trunk to expose the fresh wood. This will create a fresh, raw cut for the tree to soak in water, allow for better water absorption and helps keep your tree from becoming a fire hazard.
Keep your tree well hydrated. Keep the water in the stand well above the fresh-cut bottom of the trunk.
Christmas trees dry out with heat, so place your tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces or heater vents.
When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant”.
Unplug the lights and decorations when you are not home.
Check each set of tree lights for frayed wires, broken bulbs and loose connections.
Never run electrical cords under the carpets or rugs, over nails or in traffic areas.
Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use. To hold lights in place, string them through hooks or insulated staples, not nails or tacks. Never pull or tug lights to remove them. Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks.
In homes with small children, take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable, keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces, and avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a young child to eat them.
Remember that mistletoe, holly berries and Christmas cactus are poisonous if swallowed.
Use care with “fire salts”, which produce colored flames when thrown on wood fires. They contain heavy metals that can cause intense gastrointestinal irritation and vomiting if eaten.
Do not burn wrapping papers in the fireplace. A flash fire may result as wrappings ignite suddenly and burn intensely.

Are Your Heat Sources Ready for Winter?

Heating is one of the leading causes of home fires in the United States. Over 25 percent of these fires started due to improperly maintained heating equipment.
Tell residents that following a few simple safety tips can make all the difference:

Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned each year;

Ensure wood stoves are properly installed;

Make sure space heaters are kept at least three feet away from flammables and have an emergency tip-over, shut-off control;

Use a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace to prevent sparks from igniting drapes, furniture, and carpets; and

Never use a range or oven to heat your home.

What is "Suspicious Activity?"

It is something abnormal, possibly indicating criminal activity. It may eventually be found to have a reasonable explanation, but someone needs to notify law enforcement to come check it out. This will possibly prevent a crime from occurring. If people see the suspicious activity but do not call police, the criminal completes his theft unhindered, lives are changed, the criminal continues to vicimize more people, and he might never be located.

Particularly regarding recent daytime home burglaries, often residents have reported seeing some of these indicators to police AFTER the FACT. With all the media coverage recently, it is nearly impossible not to know that these crimes are happening, so PLEASE, if you do see something odd -listed here or not- CALL POLICE.

Call either 911 (in-progress crime, prowler in a back yard) or 577-7434 for Charleston Police dispatch line. The same dispatchers answer both lines, right here at CPD. County Expands Recycling Program to Accept Cardboard at Curbside
Charleston County will begin picking up corrugated cardboard and more paper items during its normal curbside recycling routes

During last Saturday’s 11th Annual Earth Day Festival, Charleston County Council member Colleen Condon announced that Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department has expanded its recycling program to accept corrugated cardboard as part of its residential curbside recycling program. Corrugated cardboard is considered cardboard boxes with a middle “waffle-like” layer.

In addition to cardboard, the County is now also accepting all paper items to include envelopes with plastic windows, gift wrapping paper, etc.

“We are excited to announce that Charleston County now accepts cardboard and all types of paper in our curbside bins and dropsites,” Condon said. “If you can tear it, recycle it in your bin.”

In honor of Earth Day, the County has compost on sale for the month of April at the Bees Ferry Landfill for $1 per bag or $5 per ton, which is half off the regular price.

How to recycle cardboard:
• Residents with curbside service can now place cardboard at the curb with their regular recyclables that are placed in one bin for plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans, steel cans and aerosol cans, and in another bin for paper, such as magazines, newspaper, junk mail, paperboard (examples: cereal boxes, tissue boxes, etc.) and office paper.
• Curbside residents should flatten and place cardboard boxes, up to three feet by three feet in size, between or under their two bins or inside a separate bin. Curbside recycling in Charleston County is collected bi-weekly in the urban areas starting at 7 a.m.
• Rural residents, as well as curbside users who have cardboard pieces larger than three feet by three feet, can drop their cardboard off at the drop site locations and County staffed Convenience Centers. Charleston County Environmental Management maintains 40 cardboard drop sites and eight Convenience Centers located throughout the County.
• Residents in the rural parts of the County can utilize drop sites and Convenience Centers for recycling services. Drop site locations are open 24 hours per day and seven days a week and are not staffed. Convenience Centers are staffed by Environmental Management Department employees.

Charleston residents are reminded to be aware of door-to-door sales people, particularly “magazine sales”. Usually the concerns about these individuals are property / financial-crime related, but the possibility of a physical assault should not be ignored.

Tips:

The National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive happens every year on Mother’s Day weekend. All of the food that is collected, last year it was 100,000 pounds, comes to the Lowcountry Food Bank and Amy Kosar is in charge of the coordination of the efforts. She is trying to make sure that there is as much awareness as possible. It’s so easy, all people have to do is leave a bag of food at, in or by their mailbox and the letter carrier picks it up and brings it back to the local post office. As if the cold didn't give you enough things to worry about…

Charleston neighborhood presidents, complex managers, residents and merchants,

With the long cold-snap we are predicted to have the next week or two, and through the winter, many people will feel a need to "warm-up" their car in the mornings. Some do it to make it more comfortable for children or themselves; some to get the ice off the windshield; some just to make the car run right.

We highly recommend against leaving a vehicle running and unattended, as this opens an opportunity for the car to be stolen, even in a "safe" neighborhood. On city streets it is unlawful to do it for more than a few minutes, just for this reason.

Who steals cars this way? Consider the middle school kids at the corner tired of waiting in the cold for their bus, or the worker who can't be late again to the jobsite, or the teen runaway looking for a way out, or any other number of scenarios, not to mention professional car thieves.

If you still decide to pre-heat your vehicle (again, we discourage this), please remember that you need to also take steps to keep it from being stolen.

Lock the doors, keep visual observation

Use a CLUB or similar steering-wheel lock (separate the keys)

Block the vehicle in with another car.

Maybe now is the time to clean out that garage and keep the car inside…

People also often feel a need to leave the car running to keep the heater on when they're "just running in for a second". These include school and day-care drop-offs, delivering or picking up take-out food or dry-cleaning, convenience store stops, etc. Cars are stolen this way constantly, occasionally with small children left inside.

Please TURN the CAR OFF, Lock It, and Take The Keys (AND your purse, ladies). The couple of minutes you turn the car off will not make I the car significantly colder. You'll save yourself the misery of waiting in the cold to file the stolen car report and everything else associated with having your car stolen.

GENERAL GLOSSARY OF TERMS & INFORMATION:
Tropical Storm Watch – Conditions are possible in the specified area of the
watch within 36 hours.
Tropical Storm Warning – Conditions are expected in the specified area of the
warning within 24 hours.
Hurricane Watch – Conditions are possible in the specified area of the watch,
usually within 36 hours. During the “watch” period, prepare to take
immediate action to protect your family and property in case a “warning” is
issued.
Hurricane Warning – Conditions are expected in the specified area of the
warning, usually within 24 hours. Complete all storm preparations and
evacuate if directed to do so by local officials.
Short Term Watches and Warnings – Provide detailed information on specific
hurricane threats, such as tornadoes, floods and high winds.
Public Advisory – Issued by the National Hurricane Center and provides critical
hurricane warning and forecast information.
Tropical Cyclone Forecast/Advisory – Issued by the National Hurricane Center
and outlines the meteorological reasoning behind the warnings and forecasts.
Strike Probability Forecast – Provides a measure of the forecast track accuracy.
The probabilities have no relation to the tropical cyclone intensity.
Hurricane Local Statements – Issued by the National Weather Service and give
greater detail on how the storm will impact your area.
Short Term Forecast – Provides updated information on what the weather will
be over the next few hours in the immediate area.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE:
All public safety operations in the field will cease once the winds reach a sustained
speed of 60 mph. These conditions are risky to the safety of law enforcement, fire
and EMS personnel. If you have an emergency during this time, if you are
stranded by rising water or if you have chosen to ignore the evacuation notice
and then change your mind, once the winds reach this thresh-hold, public safety
personnel are not going to be able to assist you. However, the Emergency
Operations Center (EOC) will remain operational and as long as you have
telephone service, information can be received from the EOC to help you until
someone can reach you after the winds calm down. WAITING TO LEAVE MAY
JEOPARDIZE YOUR LIFE AND THE LIVES OF OTHERS. Once the wind speed
reduces to below 60 mph, public safety crews will once again respond to
emergency call.

YOUR OUR HURRICANE PLAN:
Have a practice drill to determine what everyone’s responsibility will be.
Educate all family members in CPR and other first aid measures.
Teach children how to use a fire extinguisher and when & how to call 911 for
emergency assistance.
Check all fire alarms, smoke alarms, etc. for proper operation.
Determine what the criteria will be as to whether you evacuate or stay in your
home.
Know your evacuation routes and determine which route you will use should
an evacuation order be issued.
Determine in advance your evacuation destination. If you will not be staying
with a friend or family member, make hotel reservations at this location as
soon as a “watch” is issued. Remember, that during an evacuation several
towns may be evacuated at the same time and hotels will fill up quickly in all
surrounding areas. Reservations can be cancelled.
Make a decision about vehicles. If you have more than one vehicle and will
not be taking all of them with you determine where the other vehicles will be
left during the storm.
Make a decision about boats and other recreational vehicles.
If you have pets, determine whether they will evacuate with you or be placed
in a shelter.
Have a list of phone numbers, such as family members, doctors, employers,
insurance company’s, etc.
Make arrangements for extra cash on hand.
Catalog all personal items NOW. Include description (brand name, model
number, age, purchase price, place of purchase, etc.) Take a picture of
everything and make two copies of the pictures and lists. Keep one copy with
you and send the other to a relative or friend out of town. Never give the
insurance company the only copy.
Have a secure place for all valuables & documents that you will need to take
with you, such as birth certificates, property deeds, insurance policies, etc.
Determine an out-of-town person who can be a “point of contact” to
communicate messages if communications are down for an extended period of
time.
Prepare and maintain a “Hurricane Kit” (a list of recommended supplies is
included). It is recommended that you have approximately 7 gallons of water
for each person and food supplies for a minimum of 2 weeks.
Check all flashlights, battery operated radios & TVs, and other supplies in your
“Hurricane Kit” for proper operation.
Evaluate your home to determine if you can make improvements that will
provide better protection. If you have an older home, getting a professional
opinion about updated building codes, etc. may be helpful in determining
beneficial improvements.

You should also review your insurance policy, with your agent, to determine if
you need to make any coverage changes. Be sure to ask questions about
coverage for updated building codes, demolition coverage for an undamaged
portion of your home, flood coverage, understand your coverage and
deductibles, clarify any exclusions, verify that in the event of a complete loss
you will have the coverage you need to re-build, ask what you will need to
prove a claim, find out what their procedures are relative to immediate
protection of the home following a loss, ask who to contact immediately
following the storm and get phone numbers, how long you may expect to
wait for an adjuster, how contact will be made in the event that all
communications are lost for a period of time, and any other questions that
you can think of. Preparing now will make the claims process much easier and
less stressful for everyone.
Obtain and prepare plywood, plastic, shutters or other protective provision
for windows & doors. Install and inspect the covering in advance of an
emergency to insure proper fit.
PREPARING THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME:
The most important thing you can do to protect your home is to protect the
openings where the wind can get in. Available options include hurricane
shutters (obtain DRB approval first!), plywood covering during the storm, etc.
Check your garage doors and consider installing braces on them.
Keep all windows completely closed during a storm.
Bring in any objects that can blow away, including garbage cans, lawn
furniture, garden tools, grills, plants, etc. Anchor objects that cannot be
brought inside.
Disconnect propane gas tanks and turn off the main gas line.
Turn off gas appliances at their individual shut-off valves inside your home, if
accessible. Do not turn them off at the outside meter.
Fill your vehicle’s gas tanks as soon as possible to avoid long lines and delays.
Keep a full tank of gas immediately before and following the storm because
gas may not be available in the area for several days (remember, pumps don’t
work when there is no electricity!).
Park any vehicles that are not evacuating with you in a garage or carport. If
this is not available, park your vehicle as close to the side of the house as
possible away from any trees that may fall.
Do not trim trees or shrubbery immediately before a storm, because the debris
will not be collected. This debris can become a flying obstacle during a storm
and be very dangerous during high winds.
Prepare your pool. Lower the water level of your swimming pool
approximately 6 inches to accommodate heavy rains but do not drain it
completely. Add extra chlorine to the pool and turn off electricity to the pool
equipment.

PREPARING THE INSIDE OF YOUR HOME:
If you choose not to evacuate or it is not a feasible option, you should prepare
the inside of your home in advance to ensure your quality of life in the days
following a hurricane. Be sure you have your supplies and that they are in a
secure location.
Choose a “Safe Room” where you will ride out the storm. Normally, this
would be a hallway, large interior closet or an interior bathroom with no
windows.
Equip your “safe room” with a battery-operated radio or TV and extra
batteries; chairs, sleeping bags or cushions; snacks and drinking water; towels;
games, cards, books; etc. A slow moving storm could mean a long wait.
Have a mattress ready to move into your safe room if advised to do so by
emergency personnel. You should only have to do this in an extremely severe
storm.
Turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, especially sensitive
electronics BEFORE THE POWER GOES OUT. If the power goes out, turn off
the circuit breaker or remove fuses. You might want to leave on one circuit
breaker that operates a lamp, so that you will know when the power has been
restored.
If the electricity goes off, use only flashlights. Never use candles or kerosene
lamps during the storm.
Never cook during the storm. A gust of wind could spread a fire, and the fire
department would not be able to respond.
Tell stories, sing songs or play games to keep children calm.
Do not go outside during the storm, unless winds have calmed briefly and
protective repairs are absolutely necessary. The winds and rain may stop for a
few minutes to more than half an hour and then can suddenly pick back up
again from the opposite direction, possibly with greater force than before.
Turn your refrigerator & freezer to their coldest settings. Freeze water in
plastic jugs and use them to fill empty spaces in your refrigerator and freezer to
help keep food cool. Cover your refrigerator with blankets and secure them
with ropes to keep the coldness in. If you open the refrigerator only when
necessary and close it quickly, you can keep food cool for up to 2 days
without electricity.
Prepare a water supply for bathing and sanitary purposes by storing water in
the bathtub and other jugs and bottles. Seal the bathtub well by caulking
around the drain to keep the water from running out. Remember that this
water is NOT for drinking.
Place valuables and personal papers in a waterproof container or plastic
garbage bags and store them on the top shelf of a closet. Include voter
registration cards, passports, visas, and all important papers.
Take identification and insurance papers with you if you leave your home
(you should take a recent electric or other utility bill, voter registration card,
etc. with you to prove permanent residency and facilitate re-entry).

Fill clean, sanitary jugs with water for drinking. You will need a minimum of 7
gallons per person. Sterilize the jugs by putting a little chlorine bleach (plain,
no lemon) in some water, sloshing them around and rinsing thoroughly.

AFTER THE STORM HAS PASSED:
Stay tuned to the radio or TV and remain indoors until you hear the “all
clear”.
Stay away form ALL downed power lines. The line can still be “live” whether
the power is off in your neighborhood or not.
Do not use your telephone unless you have an emergency.
Do not call 911 except for life-threatening situations.
If your home has sustained structural damage, do not move back in until local
officials check it. The county has plans to certify buildings for safety before
habitation.
Do not allow children to walk around without shoes.
Avoid weakened bridges and washed out roads. Do not drive into flooded
areas.
Stay on firm ground. Moving water only 6 inches deep can sweep you off
your feet. Standing water may also be electrically charged from underground
or downed power lines.
Check gas, water and electrical lines and appliances for damage.
Avoid using candles and other open flames indoors. Use a flashlight to inspect
for damage.
Do not cut trees that are touching or even near power lines.
Do not pile debris near power or telephone poles or equipment. This will
delay service from being restored.
Do not call the police or utility companies immediately to report downed
power lines, broken gas or water mains or overturned gas tanks.
Utility companies will restore electric, gas, and water and/or telephone service
as quickly as possible. If service has been restored in your neighborhood and
you are still having trouble, call the utility company.
Remember that while emergency crews will begin clearing roads and effecting
repairs immediately after the storm, neighborhood streets have a lower
priority than major thoroughfares.
Don’t wait for the city or county to clear your streets. If possible, get ablebodied
neighbors together to clear a path for traffic and emergency vehicles.
Solid waste departments will collect trash as soon as possible. Priority is given
to household garbage, so separate it from other trash and debris. If you fail to
separate your garbage, you could create a health risk and attract rodents and
other animals.
DO NOT CONNECT A PORTABLE OR RV GENERATOR TO YOUR HOUSE
WIRING. THE POWER FROM THESE GENERATORS CAN ACTUALLY FLOW
OUT OF YOUR HOUSE AND RECHARGE THE LINES, CAUSING INJURY TO

should only be connected to electrical systems that have been properly
designed, equipped and inspected by the electric company or building
department.
Portable generators should be used only OUTSIDE of your home. Generators
emit carbon monoxide gas that is poisonous.
When using a generator, run a separate, heavy-duty properly grounded
extension cord from the generator directly to EACH of the electrical appliances
you want to power.
When using a generator, calculate the total power consumption (number of
watts) of all the appliances you intend to connect to be sure that you stay
within the load capacity of your generator. DO NOT OVERLOAD THE
GENERATOR.
Do not drink tap water immediately after a hurricane. Assume a boil water
order is in effect until you are informed it has been lifted.
If you did not store sufficient drinking water and must use water from the tap,
do the following: FIRST, strain the water through a paper towel or several
layers of thick cloth to remove dirt before purifying, or let the water settle in a
container for 24-hours so that solid particles will sink to the bottom; SECOND,
use one of the following methods to purify the water…(1) keep water boiling
at a rolling rate for 3-5 minutes, OR add 4 water purification tables per gallon,
OR add 12 drops of 2% tincture of iodine per gallon of water, OR add 8
drops of household bleach (without lemon or other additives) per gallon of
water.
It is important to take action immediately after the storm to safeguard your
home and prevent more damage from occurring. That is why it is important
to have all of the necessary supplies on hand.
Take pictures and make detailed lists & descriptions of all damages inside and
outside of your home.
If you do not have insurance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA) will set up disaster application centers within 2 weeks after the storm.
If you hire an individual or business to make repairs for you, check to make
sure that they have a current business license, are properly insured (including
liability & worker’s comp), and possess a permit authorizing them to do the
work. These safe guards will help to protect you from unsavory individuals or
businesses taking advantage of you.

Please remember the following tips for better recyling in your blue bin.

No plastic bottle tops or metal beer tops are allowed.
Only plastic with #1 and #2 allowed. Most yogurt containers are not allowed.
No Cardboard milk or juice containers.
No egg cartons....take back to grocery store..Publix recycles the cardboard ones.

Quick update.. Maid Bergaid will be on property Friday to do a good spring cleaning on the inside and out.

We are looking into having a maid service come out every 2-3 weeks to keep the property looking nice.

I'll be meeting with Phil @ LaRoche Paving and Grading in the next few weeks to confirm the work that needs to be done which will take a couple weeks to complete. I will give everyone a good heads up when that will be so arrangements can be made for parking.

Spring is here!

As you all have noticed, Brett and crew with CB Elrod have been doing much needed repairs to the house. They have done a terrific job so far and look forward to when the job is completed.
